Maren Kruth has made a career out of 24/7 creativity. The German designer and illustrator started off in the wonderful world of fashion before twists and turns took her to the discovery of her heart’s true desire: drawing. Her delicate designs range from pretty pastel watercolours to illustrated puns and patterns. We sat down and had a chat about fashion faux pas, Coco Chanel and her secret guilty pleasure.

Hi Maren, what's your favourite drink at Happy Hour?

Monkey’s Gin with Cherry Blossom Tonic.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grow up?

A crazy artist.

Which art period or movement inspires you the most?

I don’t have a favourite art period, I find something inspirational in every movement and time. I think it’s amazing that art always has always played and still plays such an important role. That says a lot about our society and culture.

How do you create your illustrations? Talk us through the process.

Usually my work results from coincidences and circumstance. I see a nice magazine cover and think that it would look great as an illustration. Or I'm just experimenting with new pens, colours and paint brushes which then turns into something wonderful. Sometimes a specific job or project gives me a new perspective on things. This often generates new ideas by giving me access to a topic that I had never thought to look at before.

You have a background in Fashion Product Management. How is this reflected in your art?

I love fashion and everything that has to do with it: patterns, fabric, frills, lace and textures make for beautiful sketches. I'm always inspired by them.

What's the worst fashion 'faux pas' you've ever seen?

Personally I'm not a huge fan of camouflage and I don’t understand why anyone would want to wear a pattern that carries such a negative association. But that’s just a personal opinion and applies only to myself!

Tell us your secret guilty pleasure!

What's your dream project?

Someday, I’d love to illustrate for a fashion magazine.

What’s your favourite place in the world and why?

Wherever good people are. This can be anywhere from Münster to New York to somewhere far off where the sun is always shining.

Coco Chanel or Miuccia Prada?

Thanks Maren!
